Seagate this week announced several new additions to the FreeAgent GoFlex line of external hard drives, offering four new models designed with Mac users in mind. These portable and desktop drives feature Mac-friendly formatting, FireWire and USB interfaces, and are compatible with Apple Time Machine backup software. Seagate also offers seamless Windows compatibility with free Seagate HFS+ drivers for PC and the ability to change the drive interfaces to USB 3.0 or powered eSATA, which are more commonly found on Windows machines. The GoFlex for Mac line up includes three different portable drives in the 2.5-inch form factor, and one 3.5-inch desktop drive. All four models come with FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 cables included.

The GoFlex for Mac line features a durable, scratch-resistant metallic finish on all drives, and is covered by a three-year warranty through Seagate. The standard GoFlex for Mac portable drive is a 2.5-inch hard drive available in 1TB and 1.5TB capacities. It is designed to work with Apple Time Machine software out of the box. The drive sells for $199.99 for 1TB, and $249.99 for 1.5TB. A limited edition version of this drive is also available, offering the same 1TB capacity in a drive only 12.5 mm thick, which Seagate touts as the slimmest high capacity drive on the market today.

The GoFlex for Mac Limited Edition portable drive will be available for $199.95. The GoFlex Pro for Mac keeps the 2.5-inch form factor, but packs a 7,200rpm drive. This drive is smaller in capacity, but offers faster read/write speeds than the SSD varieties, allowing it to take full advantage of the bundled FireWire 800 connection. Last but not least, the Go Flex Desk has the largest capacity of the GoFlex for Mac line. The GoFlex Desk for Mac is a 3.5-inch high-capacity external desktop drive, available with either 2 or 3TB of storage space. Thanks to optional software from Seagate, the drive's included dock displays real-time disk capacity, letting you know at a glance how much storage space is still available.
